Club Profile – Firebirds Model Club in Hampshire

Firebirds Model Club is a predominantly fixed wing aeromodelling club, but it’s origins go right back to 1973 when it had members interested in model car racing and model boats too. The black and white photograph taken in 1977 is one of the clubs most prized positions and in the background you can see where the Firebirds name came from. The Firebirds model club was indeed started by the firemen based at Botley fire station and monthly meetings were held there until relatively recently. Amazingly at least one member from that 1973 member still flies regularly although their hair may not be as long... or the same colour... or even all there!

Firebirds has a keen community of both electric and IC (although diminishing) fixed wing flyers, with many members flying both disciplines. We have modellers who build from scratch flying alongside pilots who prefer ARTF models. Occasionally members will fly a small electric helicopter or multicopters but our main interest is fixed wing. There has also been talk of a few members meeting at secluded waterways and god forbid dabbling with boats again, whatever next.

All aspects of the hobby are present, with interests ranging from control-line and vintage, through to scale models and warbirds; there are also a number of members who are keen 3D and pattern flyers. We actively promote tuition and Firebirds is one of the main teaching clubs in the South Coast area.

Many of our current club members learnt to fly with the club and some have gone on to be club instructors themselves, we therefore have several members who are happy to help new members learn to fly or just help with those that need to just hone their skills.

Like many clubs we have been through a difficult few years with the pandemic, but for us not helped by losing 2 flying fields in quick succession, thankfully and fingers crossed we now have a great new site and very happy and accommodating farmers as landlords.

Anyway, We're a friendly club and love to meet new people and are open to new members, be they new to the sport or more experienced flyers. We recommend that the best way to contact us is initially by e-mail to arrange a visit to our flying field to some of our members.

Our flying site is a very short drive from Botley village centre

Firebirds Model Club is affiliated with the BMFA.
